Mayo Youth Tour 2009

Over the bank holiday weekend, the Mayo International Youth Tour based in Kiltimagh, Co. Mayo was held and weather conditions were less than favourable throughout.

For Under 16 riders, the opening stage on Saturday morning was a 43k road race. After 35k of racing a 7-man break went clear of the pack. This break included 3 members of the Belgium team, Jack Wilson and David Boyd both riders competing on the Ireland team, Cormac Clarke from the Irish Development Team and Stamullen rider Javan, who is competing with the Leinster team in this 3-day 4-stage race.

This leading break managed to stay clear for the remainder of the race and riding into a very strong headwind in the long finishing straight, Nulty proved to be the strongest and blasted his way to victory. 2nd place went to Jack Wilson from the Irish Team and 3rd to James Baeyens from Belgium Lotto Team. Time bonus of 3-2-1 awarded to 1st 3 over the line. After the race, a delighted Javan, was presented with the race leaders jersey.

In the 2nd stage on Sunday morning which was a 4k Time Trial, Nulty proved to be the strongest once again, by taking the honours this time from Robert Anderson from the Ulster team. When he beat Anderson by 4-seconds and with Anderson missing out on the leading break in the opening stage, this meant that Javan stretched his overall lead to 14-seconds over 2nd placed rider on GC, Jack Wilson.

On Stage 3, which was a road race held on Sunday afternoon, this race ended in a bunch sprint with victory going to Wilson, with Nulty finishing on the same time as the winner in 9th position and with 3-seconds bonus time going to Wilson, thus reducing Javan’s lead to 11-seconds going into Monday morning.

However, on Monday’s final stage, Javan and his Leinster teammates defended his overall lead extremely well and at the finish of the stage, stage victory went to Robert Anderson with Belgium rider Robin Schuermans 2nd, with Jack Wilson taking 3rd place and gaining 1-second bonus time, leaving Javan the outright winner by 10-seconds from Wilson. The next 3 placing went to Belgium riders.

Incidentally, another Meath rider David Boyd from Clonardd CC and riding on the Ireland team rode extremely well throughout, finishing in 7th place overall.

This was an outstanding win for Javan, as all of the top riders in Ireland, as well as riders from Belgium and UK riders were present.

It certainly augurs very well for this talented young riders future in the sport.
